Here are theGeekbenchscores, by way of comparison higher numbers are better

But would I recommend it for parents, grandparents, kids, or nontech nerds who just want an inexpensive internet or app device with a big enough screen, easy enough intece, to buy for the first time or upgrade after a long time?

So, iPad isnt the leap over the iPad Air that iPad Pro was, especially for multithreaded operations. But for singlethreaded operations, which includes most user interactions, its a respecle hop.

Unless youve been using a .inch iPad Pro, though, you probably wont notice. And if you have, youre probably not buying an iPad to replace it.

So, iPad looks like… an iPad. Its part of the same design language that dates all the way back to the iPad mini. Rumor has it Apple is working on a new, more edgetoedge design language for iPad. But that would be for the nextgeneration, not for iPad .

For anyone on an iPad , the screen will be a terrific, Retinalevel upgrade. For anyone using iPad to iPad Air, itll be slightly better and considerably lighter for all but the Air. For anyone on iPad Air , though, itll be a diagonal step back.

A, though, is still plenty powerful for a x consumergrade iPad. Its been driving the internal resolution x pixels of iPhone Plus for over a yearandahalf without any processorlevel problems.

Daylight, macro, and lowlight on iPad Pro left and iPad right.

My mom upgraded from an original iPad Air to an iPad Pro last year but shes an artist and Apple had her at Pencil. Several other members of my extended mily are still on older iPads and arent able to run newer versions of iOS or use newer features like splitview. Theyre starting to think about an upgrade but they dont want to pay Pro prices for it.

iPad Air and iPad Pro have been able to do this since the feature became available but for anyone on an older iPad, itll mean a huge boost in productivity or just plain convenience.

Realistically, very little outside highend graphics apps, extremely intensive photo filters, or bleedingedge games will peg an Apple A chipset. If youre coming from anything other than an iPad Air , things will be hockeystickgraph better. Even coming from an iPad Air , the single thread improvement is enough to make everything seem snappier and more responsive.

The iPad has the same retina density as previousgeneration .inch iPads going back to x pixels at pixelsperinch ppi. If youve used any iPad since iPad , then you already know how that looks. If not, from a normal viewing distance, the grid of dots disappears and all you see is the and s on the screen.

Its not iPad Air . Its certainly not iPad Pro . Apple calls it iPad th Generation but its not a sequel to the iPad either. Instead, the new .inch iPad is more an amalgam of everything thats come before. Its got the formctor of the original Air but almost as much power as the Pro. It doesnt have Apple Pencil or Smart Connector, but its got the lowest price tag of any fulld iPad, ever. If you want a Pro, get a Pro. If you want an inexpensive let to access the web and the App Store, and a solid upgrade from iPad all the way through iPad Air, get the new iPad th Generation.

GB of RAM means iPad , like iPad Air and the .inch iPad Pro, can run two fullon apps, sidebyside, at the same time. You can browse the web and take notes at the same time or keep your messages open while working on your presentation. You can also watch pictureinpicture video, so you dont miss the movie while looking up the cast and tweeting about it at the same time.

We live in an age of megapixels, K mobile cameras, with optical and cinematic silization, that shoot in widegamut and can apply depthoffield effects on the fly. In an age of megapixel, p, Retina Flash selfies and boomerang videos. The iPad camera system, though, is of a previous age.

iPad optics are more in line with the inch iPad Pro which is to say an iPhone or iPad Air camera system with an iPhone s Image Signal Processor ISP. That means megapixels, p video out back and . megapixels, p video up front. Yeah.

The lack of rose gold is irksome for those of us who like to match all our gear. In , I had rose gold for just about everything. Now I have more of an eclectic mix. Maybe some s simply dont sell as well, or Apple wants to keep some s exclusive for premium products. Either way, I miss the options.

Would I buy the iPad th Generation henceforth iPad for efficiency or recommend it to anyone like me? Not unless there was an urgent need for an extra, cheap let to keep in a camper or for car trips.

Storage options include GB, if you want a light, thin client to watch movies and work with online, or GB if you want to store a lot of photos, videos, games, and documents.

Inside every iPad is an Apple A systemonachip SoC with integrated M motion coprocessor and GB of RAM. Its not the A Fusion found in iPhone or even the AX found in the iPads Pro, but its the exact same SoC that powers iPhone s.

There are no speaker grills on the top of iPad because it lacks the fourspeaker system of the .inch iPad Pro. That leaves just the dual, stereo speaker grills on the bottom, like iPad Air and iPad Air . Theres also no mute/rotation lock switch, which Apple offered on iPad Air but eliminated on iPad Air and subsequent iPads. Theres also no camera bump like on the .inch iPad Pro because iPad doesnt have the newer, larger camera system but rather the older, smaller .inch iPad Pro system.

Its not the latest and the greatest, but iPad th generation is the least expensive fulld iPad ever and, for some, thats the feature that matters most.

I dont typically begin reviews talking about price. I typically end them that way. With iPad , though, everything begins and ends with the price.

If this were a new Pro, it would be showstopperlevel outdated. For a lowcost iPad, itll be an improvement over everything from iPad to iPad Air, and an eversoslight improvement over iPad Air .

iPad combines elements of iPad Air , iPad Air , and iPad Pro .. Rather than repeat review material here, please see my previous reviews.

There was something about iPad that appealed to the mainstream in a way traditional PCs never had. They were r, more approachable, more friendly. So, they got iPad , and they held on to it. Because it worked and it kept on working.

I can notice the difference when Im holding iPad and the .inch iPad Pro and trying to weight them out, but just barely. The visual difference between the two casings is r more apparent. Ultimately, lightness is a boon for usability you can hold it longer, read longer, watch longer, work longer, etc. iPad is r from a backbreaker, though, which means its likely not a dealbreaker either.

This wont be an easy review for me. Im all about bleedingedge tech. If Apple had introduced a new iPad Pro in March, Id have snapped it up in a heartbeat and then immediately started dreaming about what might come next.

iPad photography has never been taken as seriously as iPhone, despite how powerful a large viewfinder can be for novices and professionals alike. I think thats beginning to change, though. At least I hope it is.

Color options include silver, space gray, and gold. Theres no rose gold, which remains exclusive to the .inch iPad Pro. And theres no matte black, jet black, or Product RED either, all of which remain exclusive to iPhone .

Again, its tough to review a product thats not meant for me. I look at the specs and features and… nope, nope, nope. Everything from the to the camera to the chipset to the accessories are better on the .inch iPad Pro. And its hard not to just recommend that for everyone.

For anyone who wants to ditch or diminish their PC, iPad Pro is there at a price. For anyone who wants a new, fulld iPad and doesnt want to pay a lot for it, though, is iPad now the best option?

Its sRGB, same as all the other iPads up to and including the .inch iPad Pro, which means no DCIP wide gamut or True Tone ambient light matching like the .inch iPad Pro. So, no deep reds, vibrant greens, or white that looks less blue or yellow and more like .

Its an updated version of the screen from iPad Air , camera system from iPad Air , and chipset from iPhone s the nonX version of the chipset in iPad Pro.

Thats because iPad lacks the antiglare, laminated , introduced on iPad Air . It does have the r more advanced inidual calibration methods Apple has implemented in recent years, which balances at the subpixel level. But s dont look as though theyre trappedinsidethe glass they way they do on iPad Air and iPad Pro. They look like theyre painted beneath it.

For now, iPad will work for taking everyday photos or videos in relatively weit situations, scanning s to digitize, fun solo or mily projects, taking FaceTime or video calls, and similar tasks.

iPad is built off the iPad Air platform. Outwardly, it looks like something of a cross between the original iPad Air and iPad Air , with a little .inch iPad Pro thrown in. Its almost like an iPad Air . but with the missing or minimized plastic RF windows of the Pro.

Youre not getting a next generation iPad for that price, of course. Youre not even getting last years iPad there wasnt one, aside from the Pro. What you are getting is an amalgam of several previous generation iPads with a jolt of new internals.

At , a lot of those nope, nope, nope, nopes… dont disappear, but become well, well, well, wells…

For them, iPad moves beyond even a well and becomes wellqualified yes.

When iPad launched, the lineup outside the Apple Store was… different. Some of my high school teachers were there. So were the thers and mothers of my friends, uncles and aunts, even their grandparents. And there were kids. Lots of kids.

If you have pro needs, you should absolutely get the pro iPad with AX or better, wait for Apple to drop an update pro iPad with A/X. Otherwise, iPad will be just fine for everyday apps and games.

Thats the same thinness and weight as the original iPad Air, and . inches . mm thicker and . pounds grams heavier than the iPad Air or .inch iPad Pro. Its one of the most apparent ways in which iPad is more of an iPad Air SE than an iPad Air .

Retina didnt compel many of them to upgrade, nor did the advent of Air. But that was six years ago. This is now. And in that time, iPad , iPad , iPad , and even iPad Air, capable and sturdy as they may be, have aged. They cant all run all of the apps any more or use new features like split view. And so the people who bought them and held on to them are starting to look for whats next.

So, youll experience more glare on iPad than other recent iPads. If you mostly use your iPad inside you wont have a problem. If you like to take it to the park and sit beneath the midday sun, youll need to find a spot of shade or angle yourself to minimize it.

WiFi is dualband .ac MIMO and Bluetooth is .. Same as all other modern iPads. That means you can connect to everything from hotspots to AirPods quickly and efficiently. The cellular model also supports bands of LTE. Thats two less than the .inch iPad Pro, but one more than the .inch model and iPad Air .

The Fusion in A involves two dualcore processors, one a highpowered set for performance, the other a lowerpowered set for battery efficiency, and it enables features like simulated depthoffield photography. The X in AX references double the graphics cores instead of and more memory to compute more pixels and push them around ster, for truly prolevel apps like intensive D modelers.

iPad Pro let on the left vs. iPad let on the right from two angles.

iPad is more than just hardware. Its iOS and the App Store that brings the hardware to life. Currently on version ., iOS includes a variety of builtin apps for everything from web browsing to mail, photography to ebooks, maps to movie. It also gives you access to to the thousands upon thousands of letoptimized apps in the App Store that help you do pretty much everything else. Nothing else offers this much highquality, letoptimized software and it all runs just fine on iPad .

Thats the question that needs answering, especially for people who still havent gotten into computing or online, or have held onto previous generation iPads long enough that theyre starting to need a replacement.

Its . inches mm tall, . inches . mm wide, . inches . mm thin, and weighs in at . pounds grams for the WiFi version and . pounds grams for the cellular version.

It does have Live Photos, though. You can both record and playback Apples momentcaptures on iPad , which is great.

Its not an iPad Pro or an iPad Air and its not meant to be. Those would cost premium iPad dollars. iPad is more like an iPad Air SE, and it costs less than ever. Just .

iPad also rated for the same hours of battery life Apples been promising for iPad going all the way back to the original. Ive only had time to put it through a couple cycles, and Im not using it as a primary computer or drawing canvas the way I do iPad Pro, but so r its meeting if not exceeding my expectations. Ill update after Ive had some more time with it, though.

Thanks to iPad sharing the same dimensions as the original iPad Air, its largely compatible with existing iPad Air accessories. That doesnt just include the obvious accessories that connect over Lightning cable or Bluetooth, but covers and cases as well.

Before the original iPad launched there was a rumor that it would cost . During the iPad introduction event, Steve Jobs revealed the actual price to an unbelievable . Newer versions of the .inch iPad, from iPad to iPad Air , all kept the same price point, even as older versions hang around at . The .inch iPad Pro raised the cost of entry to . iPad ?

But this isnt about me. Nor does every product Apple makes in its increasing mainstream lineup have to beforme. Perspective taking is always hard and its taken me a while to wrap my head around this new normal, but its become increasingly important to review products in the con for which theyre offered.

But its not for everyone. Its not for anyone who doesnt want to spend just to get in the door. Which is why iPad exists and starts at just .ipad iPad gen review The best value in lets today
